Introduction to Ancient Hebrew
Our introductory courses provide those starting out on their Hebrew journey with everything they need to develop basic ancient Hebrew proficiency including learning how to read and write in ancient Hebrew and learning foundational grammar, vocabulary, and translation techniques. Students with little to no knowledge of ancient Hebrew should enrol in Introduction to Ancient Hebrew A and continue on to Introduction to Ancient Hebrew B before moving onto Intermediate Ancient Hebrew.

Introduction to Ancient Hebrew A
Class Times

Structure
8 weeks
1 x 1.5hr live online class per week (recordings will be made available to students to download)
Please note: there will be a week break between 5 April-13 April for Passover and Easter

Alef-Bet (Hebrew alphabet)
Foundational vocabulary and grammar
Nouns and prepositions
Translation techniques
Basics of Hebrew verbs: Qal stem and the four conjugations
Text: Selections from Genesis 1-3
Mini-lectures: Rabbinic interpretations of Creation
Textbook: Athas and Young, Elementary Biblical Hebrew: An Introductory Grammar (Fifth Edition)
Students should purchase the textbook prior to the first class. Australian students can purchase the book here. International students will receive information about how to purchase upon enrolment.

Intermediate Ancient Hebrew
Our intermediate course develops students’ confidence in reading and translation through an in depth study of a biblical text, solidifies already acquired grammar and vocabulary, and introduces students to more advanced elements of ancient Hebrew grammar. Students are also introduced to the genre of poetry and learn the differences between Hebrew poetry and prose. This course is suitable for students with 6 months-1 year of ancient Hebrew and students wanting to revise foundational features of ancient Hebrew grammar and practice their translation skills.

Advanced Ancient Hebrew
Our advanced course challenges students to sharpen their reading and translation skills and broaden their vocabulary through focus on more complex genres, including biblical poetry and prophetic literature. This course is suitable for students who have completed Intermediate Ancient Hebrew and/or for students who have been studying ancient Hebrew more than one year.
